Nesting material can obstruct a chimney. The first step is to assess what is present, whether the nest is active, and what work can lawfully and safely take place.

Do not light a fire to try to dislodge a nest. Stop using the appliance and ask for advice. Camera inspection can help understand the blockage and check that material has been cleared where removal is appropriate.

Wild birds, their eggs and active nests have legal protection. Work must take account of those protections at any time of year, not simply a calendar-based nesting season. Patrick will discuss the situation before arranging clearance.

Once the chimney has been assessed and any lawful clearance completed, a suitable bird guard may help reduce future entry. It must be appropriate for the flue and appliance.

What to expect

  • Assessment of the suspected blockage
  • Consideration of nesting activity
  • Clearance only where appropriate and lawful
  • Camera checks and guard advice
